KATHMANDU — Gham Power Nepal has introduced the country's first Soluble Lead-Flow Battery (SLFB), an emerging energy-storage technology developed and demonstrated specifically for Nepal's needs. The company hosted an exclusive press event on September 4 in Kathmandu, giving journalists and energy-sector professionals a first look at the system in action.
The centerpiece of the event was a live, hands-on demonstration led by Professor Richard Wills of the University of Southampton, who walked attendees through how the battery is built and how it operates from charging and discharging to the way lead is recovered and reused inside the system. It was a rare opportunity for local media and industry figures to see flow-battery technology up close and question the researcher directly.
What sets the SLFB apart is its core material: lead recovered from used batteries, repurposed as the foundation for storing electricity generated by solar and hydropower installations. As Nepal's renewable energy capacity continues to expand, the demand for reliable, longer-duration storage is growing alongside it. Gham Power positions the SLFB as a homegrown answer to that gap, built from recycled material and tailored to the country's resources and grid conditions.

The technology is being developed through a partnership that brings together Gham Power, the University of Southampton, SOLead Energy, and Swanbarton pairing international research expertise with local knowledge of Nepal's operating environment. Beyond the technical demonstration, the event doubled as a forum for broader conversation about the future of energy storage in Nepal, drawing journalists, energy professionals, and clean-energy advocates.
